Standard estimate treating each brick as a box with mortar on all sides — add 5% for breakage/wastage when ordering. Not a substitute for a detailed wall schedule.

How this is calculated

Wall volume = (Length × Height − opening area) × thickness. The volume of one brick with mortar is its own dimensions plus the mortar joint added on each side; dividing wall volume by this gives the brick count.

Mortar volume is the wall volume left over after subtracting the bricks' own (mortar-free) volume. That mortar volume is increased by the standard 1.33 dry-volume factor, then split by the cement:sand ratio and converted to bags (1 bag = 50 kg = 0.0347 cum) the same way as the concrete calculator.

Common questions

How many bricks are needed per square foot of wall?

For a standard Indian brick (9×4.25×3 in) with 10mm mortar joints, a 9-inch wall needs roughly 10-11 bricks per square foot, and a 4.5-inch (half-brick) wall needs roughly 5-5.5 bricks per square foot.

How do you calculate the number of bricks for a wall?

Divide the wall volume (length × height × thickness) by the volume of one brick including mortar on all sides.

What mortar ratio is used for brickwork?

1:6 (cement:sand) is the most common ratio for general brickwork in India. 1:4 is used for load-bearing or higher-strength requirements.
